Artist Statement
Welcome to my website. I am an oil painter with a long history of working in watercolor and acrylics. Each medium has it's own special quality, application, and outcome. My preference now is oil painting. On my site you can view a series of Pacific Northwest river and waterfall paintings in acrylic, on canvas. I have found acrylic paints with a gloss medium to be successful in obtaining the transparent, colorful nature of water, in sunshine. I have hiked to each location and spent time sketching, photographing, following the rivers flow, and have always treated myself to breakfast, watching the sun rise above the trees. And now I am creating methods of oil painting that the old masters of the Baroque period painted. I remove paint from the first dark layer to create the image then apply transparent paints to that area. I complete the painting with opaque paints and deliberately apply warm and cool pigments appropriately, to obtain dimension and depth. You can view the florals in the Oil section to see the outcomes. The masters of that period utilized the darkness of the backgrounds with focuses of light and minimum usage of color. I have enjoyed their process while adding bright color and backgrounds. My twist on their methodology. |
